Sustainability Tips

At request of the community, we are happy to introduce a new segment to the newsletter. Each month we will share a short but sweet piece on ‘how to’ make small changes that can help our collective efforts in protecting our planet, one for waste and one for energy efficiency.

Waste tip

Reduce textile waste by:

  • wearing what you own (at least 30 times),
  • mending and altering,
  • washing with care,
  • turning old clothes and linen into rags,
  • thrift shopping and borrowing items.

The reuse and repair trail (reusetrail.com.au) provides information about local sources of second-hand shopping and clothing mending and alteration services.

Why is this important? The fashion industry is estimated to be responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Australia is the second highest consumer of textiles per person and each person disposes an average 23kg of clothing to landfill each year.

Energy-saving tip

Keep warm in the cooler by months by:

  • adding a layer of clothing or a blanket before switching on the heater,
  • opening blinds and curtains to allow the sun to heat a room,
  • if you do switch the heating on, set the thermostat to 18-20oC, use a door snake or a rolled up towel to stop air escaping, and keep your heating system well maintained.

Why is this important? Not only does carbon-fuelled electricity significantly contribute to our greenhouse gas emissions, but the cost of electricity is on the rise.

Grants, rebates and reliefs

NSW Household Energy Rebates

Only 70% of households in the Lismore LGA are currently receiving the Low Income Household Rebate that they are eligible for. Uptake for other electricity bill rebates, such as the seniors or family rebate, is even lower – meaning, many of us could be missing out on discounts off our electricity bill.

The NSW Government has a range of rebates for eligible householders, for those on low incomes, earning family support or on a pension. Find out if you are eligible and apply at Service NSW.
