Engage with the democratic process through our meetings and briefings

Council meetings

Council meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6pm in the Council Chambers, Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah. Meetings are open to the public with the exception of confidential matters.

Council meetings are governed by a Code of Meeting Practice. To view the agendas for each month go to our Business Papers section.

Public access

A public access session is held at the start of every Council meeting. People can speak for five minutes on any agenda item included the business paper. Argument for and against any matter on the agenda is restricted to one presentation each. This works on a first in best dressed system. Bookings are essential for the public access session. Phone us on 1300 87 83 87.

Public question time

A public question time is held following public access. There is no need to book.

People who wish to ask a question may put up their hand and the Mayor will call each in turn. People state their name and ask their question. The question may have to be taken on notice should an immediate answer not be able to be given. People may be asked to place the question in writing so Council can formally respond.

Councillor briefings

Councillor briefings are held most Tuesday evenings so staff can provide background on issues or projects and Councillors have a chance to brainstorm and discuss.

The briefings are held in the Council Chambers from 6pm and everyone is welcome. Topics for each briefing can be found in our Calendar.

For more information about briefings, phone us on 1300 87 83 87.
