About the Project
The Tweed Street and Dunoon Road Corridor is one of the most important transport links into Lismore, connecting communities, supporting local businesses and providing access to major community, education and economic destinations across the region.
These include the Lismore Showgrounds, Lismore Saleyards, the future Richmond River High School and the NSW Resilient Lands Program development. The corridor also provides an important connection between Lismore and the villages of Dunoon, The Channon and Modanville.
Following years of wear and tear, and significant damage caused by the 2022 flood event, the corridor was identified as a priority for upgrade to improve road safety, flood resilience and transport efficiency.
Importantly, this project reflects what the community told us they wanted. More than 500 residents and stakeholders participated in consultation and more than 90 per cent supported improvements to the corridor.
The project will upgrade approximately 1.7 kilometres of Tweed Street and Dunoon Road, including wider travel lanes, sealed road shoulders, improved drainage infrastructure and the construction of three new roundabouts to improve safety and traffic flow.
Current Status
The project is currently in the detailed design and community engagement phase. Council is continuing to work with businesses and key stakeholders as planning progresses.
Initial preparation works are underway near the Lismore Showgrounds to support future construction activities. Minor works will continue for the next number of months with major works to be confirmed as the design is finalised.
Funding
The $6.7 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP), which is contributing $4.86 million, and the Australian and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, which is contributing $1.21 million.
Early Works Underway
Initial preparation works have commenced on Dunoon Road near the Lismore Showgrounds in preparation for the construction of a new roundabout.
These works include:
- Soil stabilisation
- Drainage improvements
- Ground preparation for future roundabout construction
- Seeding and establishment of future work areas
Residents may notice higher-than-normal earthworks in the area. These earthworks are being carried out to allow the underlying soft soils to settle before construction progresses. The additional material will remain in place for approximately two to three months to achieve the required ground stability.
Once settlement has occurred, the excess material will be removed and the area lowered to the final roundabout level, creating a slightly elevated and consistent road profile.
The current earthworks are expected to be completed shortly, after which the area will be seeded and left to settle ahead of future construction activities.
Temporary traffic lights are operating during daytime works. Outside work hours, normal traffic conditions apply.
