Council’s climate commitments

Council is preparing the Resilience and Adaptation Strategy to guide how our community can adapt to a changing climate and reduce future risks, so we can continue to live, survive and thrive.

Early scoping included consultation with key stakeholders in late 2023. The outcomes are outlined in the Climate Ready Lismore Plan: Stakeholder Report(PDF, 1MB), which has informed the draft Resilience and Adaptation Strategy, now on public exhibition.

Building on Lismore’s lived experience of flooding, drought and bushfires, Council is seeking broader community input to help refine the draft Strategy. Community members are invited to share their experiences, priorities and ideas for strengthening local resilience.

Lismore City Council is committed Council to prioritising a place-based approach to developing climate change resilience frameworks.

So far, Council have worked with the communities at Nimbin and The Channon to develop such frameworks.

The Community Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP) has helped Lismore City Council to improve the energy efficiency of several community facilities, Council buildings and streetlighting.

Wide-ranging solutions contribute to reducing the severity of climate change, and respond to the impacts of the changing climate.

• The Affordable and Diverse Housing Strategy seeks to address the inequities of the housing market and provide homes that are suitable for our residents
• The Biodiversity Management Strategy seeks to protect and enhance our area’s unique biodiversity
• The Urban Green Corridors Plan improves habitat connectivity, improving biodiversity outcomes
• The Rural Landholder Initiative offers grants to assist rural landholders to carry out restoration works to enhance and protect biodiversity
• The My Local Native Garden Guide helps community in designing and planting native landscapes.
