Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens

A group of school students walking through a eucalypt forest.

The Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens are located on Widjabul land immediately north of the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre.

The botanic gardens were officially opened in June 2013, with the Friends of Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens being the driving force behind its establishment. This passionate group continues its work to this day, in partnership with Council.

The gardens aim to:

  • support the conservation of local rainforest species
  • facilitate scientific plant research
  • preserve the history of human interaction with the rainforest
  • educate people about this special environment

It’s a great location to take visitors and kids on a guided tour, to explore on your own or to just sit and breathe.

Brochures along with self-guiding maps are available on site at the Visitor's Centre.

Volunteering

The Friends of Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens have been working to establish and maintain the gardens since 2000. The group is always looking for volunteers to join them.

There are many tasks to suit different people's interests and skills, from planting and weeding at weekly Wednesday working bees to being a guide, propagating plants in the nursery and special projects!

Visit the website for more information.

Sections of the gardens

  • Eucalypt forest with resident koalas - a sunny, grassy area with covered BBQ and picnic tables.
  • Hoop pine forest is cool and refreshing, with tall straight pines providing a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Useful plants garden - open and sunny, this garden is a warm place to wander. Large photo signs identify the many uses of plants, including traditional uses by Aboriginal people.
  • Rainforest area with discovery trail - a good area to see the structure of a forest with vines growing high up into the canopy, special plants with large leaves and bright berries in the understorey, and fungi, moss and ferns on the forest floor. Birds are always around and wallabies are seen regularly.
  • Sensory Garden with its solar clock, mosaic pathway and information signs about the plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander.
