Reconstruction works are complete on a stormwater drain in East Lismore.
Following a major rain event in late 2024, a retaining structure failed along the open drainage channel between 46 and 48 Oakley Avenue, East Lismore. This channel is a key part of the local stormwater network.
Repair works began in March 2025; however, works were delayed by wet weather and Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The failed section, located between two residential properties, required full reconstruction.
The reconstruction involved removing the existing concrete V-drain and replacing it with a buried pipe system. A new drop pit was installed upstream, and the downstream letterbox pit was removed. A surcharge grate was added downstream to manage excess flows beyond the pipe’s hydraulic capacity. The system is now designed to manage flows for up to a 1-in-100-year storm event.
In partnership with Civil CS Engineering, Council completed the upgrade by enclosing the system with pipework, installing surcharge control measures, and landscaping the site. This closed system reduces public safety risks associated with open channel flow.
The Stormwater team will continue to inspect and maintain the system under Council’s existing service level agreement.
