About the project
Lismore City Council is pleased to deliver the newly upgraded multi-sports facility to the Caniaba community.
Precinct upgrades include a shared basketball and netball half court, a shared tennis and pickle ball court, as well as two synthetic cricket nets. General improvements have also been made to surrounding footpaths, lighting, landscaping and signage. The playground, cricket oval, skatepark, basketball court and pavilion remain.
Works to renew the facility aligned with Council’s previous 2023-2027 Delivery Program and the current 2024-2034 Open Spaces Strategy.
History
The Sport and Recreation facilities located within the Perradenya Estate, were a part of the Rous Water housing development in the 1990s and were later transferred to Council’s ownership.
The precinct included two tennis courts, a small playground, cricket oval, skatepark, basketball court and pavilion. The local community rely on the precinct as a central hub for social and fitness gatherings. During the 2022 floods, the Pavilion was utilised as a refuge for flood affected persons.
Engagement
Through consultation Council was able to determine and understand community needs. We were able to design a facility that suited the community’s purpose and vision for the space.
Consultation determined that:
    - Community of Caniaba value their sports.
- The tennis courts and oval were the most used assets within the precinct.
- The variety of sports and options for all ages were important.
General improvements
Multiple improvements were made to the facility to enhance the experience and success for users. These include:
    - Removed trees to mitigate issues with leaves and debris landing on the courts and obstructing play.
- Updated entrances to the facility, including a street stair entry and adjoining car park path entry. The improved path entry increases ease of access and flow for users of different mobility.
- Upgraded facility lighting to a two-hour timer, ensuring electricity saving. Power to the lights turns off at 9pm.
- Upcycled materials from previous Council projects, were utilised as hardy sustainable furniture (i.e. wooden benches).
- Installed court drainage.
