Works included the decommissioning of current play equipment and adjoining stairs.
Play equipment removal works are complete at the Gainsborough site. Council’s staff are working to remediate the area with grass seeds at the next rain event.
As part of Council’s Parks Renewal Program and building on the recent audit that identified underperforming assets for removal in six parks across the Lismore LGA, Council will remove the playground equipment at Gainsborough Park in Goonellabah.
The audit identified Gainsborough as an underperforming park, with the playground reaching the end of its useful life and showing significant deterioration. Ongoing issues such as nearby trees and frequent stagnant water problems, made the site un-mowable and largely unusable for extended periods throughout the year. In addition to the playground, the adjoining stairs have also been assessed and found to have significantly deteriorate. These will also be removed to address safety concerns.
Due to the site’s poor condition and ongoing maintenance challenges, Council has decided not to replace the playground at Gainsborough Park. Instead, we will review the recreational needs of this area in line with the Open Space Strategy 2024–2034 to ensure any future investment is better aligned with site suitability and community needs.
