Sky's the limit for new careers with Aero Club scholarship

Wednesday, 31 May 2017

The Northern Rivers Aero Club is inviting young people interested in flying to visit them at this year’s Lismore Aviation Expo to discuss their Pathway to Wings Assisted Scholarship.

The Northern Rivers Aero Club will be offering $99 discovery flights at the Expo as well as talking to young people about the annual scholarship, which offers pilot training at a fraction of the normal price.

Aero Club Head of Operations Bill Kiernan said the Pathway to Wings training takes a beginner with no experience and teaches them to fly a plane solo. Once trained, he said the sky’s the limit for young people interested in flying careers.

“The world is short of commercial pilots – it’s that simple,” Bill said.

“The kids we have trained all have jobs. One young bloke went off and flew F-18s in Afghanistan. Most go into commercial airline services. It’s a great career, and the door is open for anybody.”

Bill said a career in flying was exciting and challenging, and he invited youngsters to try out flying at the Aero Club with no strings attached.

“We invite kids to come along, sign up and try out flying during the school holidays – you’d be mad if you didn’t,” he said.

“We provide the first step for anyone who likes the idea of flying. We have kids come in who are 17 or 18 and have never flown before but they have an interest, and a month later they are flying on their own. Can you imagine that? It's magic.”

The Lismore Aviation Expo on Saturday, 17 June will feature a range of organisations offering careers advice and training in the aviation industry, from flight attendant training at TAFE to careers in the Defence Force and Emergency Services.

The annual Lismore Aviation Expo is a great chance for people of all ages to get up close and personal with planes from the 1900s right through to the modern day as well drones, model aircraft, vintage cars and motorbikes.

Marvel at the death-defying aerobatics of Paul Bennet Airshows as well as helicopter and warbird flyovers, or enjoy the slow majesty of hot air balloons filling the sky.

Kids and families are the focus of the event and there will be adventure flights and joy flights of all sorts, children’s entertainment, food and trade stalls, and much more.

The Lismore Aviation Expo runs from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, 17 June at the Lismore Aviation Centre, Three Chain Road, South Lismore. A shuttle bus will run from the Lismore Transit Centre all day as parking is limited on site.

Entry is $5 with children under 16 free and proceeds will go to the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
