Federal Government announces $1.4 million for Oakes Oval upgrade

Friday, 28 April 2017

The Federal Government today announced it will fast track funding toward the $3 million upgrade of Lismore’s Oakes Oval.

The Federal Government will contribute $1.4 million to the project, with AFL Queensland, Lismore City Council, Lismore Swans AFL and NSW Cricket matching the funds in cash or in-kind.

The Oakes Oval redevelopment includes new grandstands, expanding the on-field playing area to boost spectator capacity and make it suitable for AFL games, replacing the change-rooms and toilet facilities, and installing a new electronic scoreboard.

“This funding could not have come at a better time as our community is now rebuilding after the devastating flood,” Page MP Kevin Hogan said.

“The upgrade of Oakes Oval will mean it will become northern New South Wales’ premier sports facility, capable of hosting premiership AFL, rugby league, soccer, and rugby union matches.

“Upgrading the oval’s spectator and player facilities will have a hugely positive effect on the region. I’m particularly excited that AFL peak bodies have already identified Oakes Oval as a potential venue for high level events.

“Together with Federal Government grants to repair crucial Council infrastructure destroyed by the flood, Category C funding for businesses and farmers, and assistance to flood-affected households, means many millions of dollars will now flow through our economy.”

Lismore Mayor Isaac Smith said that infrastructure repairs funded through natural disaster relief and redevelopments like Oakes Oval would boost prosperity in Lismore at a time when it was most needed.

“Every building or construction project represents dollars flowing back into our city,” he said.

“The Oakes Oval redevelopment is not only great news for Lismore’s reputation as a regional sporting centre and a win for local sports fans, but it is also yet another important stepping stone in rebuilding Lismore."
