Events play key role in reinvigorating Lismore

Wednesday, 17 May 2017

Lismore has a long journey ahead to rebuild after the flood, but Lismore City Council says upcoming events will help bring visitors and more than $12 million dollars into the region.

Lismore’s calendar is packed with events over the next two months including the Senior League Baseball Championships which started on Monday and the Little League Baseball Championships starting on 7 June.

The Senior League Baseball Championships is a five-day event with nine under 16s teams competing against one another, bringing around 350 visitors to Lismore and injecting more than $1 million into the Lismore economy.

The Little League Baseball Championships is an Under 13s comp with the winner representing Australia at the World Little League Series in USA. More than 20 young teams will be competing, bringing upwards of 750 people and more than $2 million to Lismore.

“And that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Council’s Tourism and Events Manager Mitch Lowe said.

“Over the next eight weeks we have an absolutely packed calendar of events… it is great timing for Lismore. As well as Council events, there are also music and performance shows and all sorts of cultural highlights happening across the city including our famous Lismore Lantern Parade.

“One of the best things people in the Northern Rivers can do to help our community is to attend these events, buy something in our local shops, and help our economy bounce back.

“The key focus of the Lismore events team over the next six to 12 months is to attract further events to Lismore, with a primary focus on bringing positive economic benefits to the city. The events we are hosting in the next eight weeks alone will bring more than $12 million into our community.”
