Classic Wallabies side shaping up for Lismore showdown

Friday, 13 October 2017

With less than two weeks until the Barbarians clash with the Classic Wallabies in Lismore, names have started to be released. Owen Finegan has been announced as coach of the Classic Wallabies with rugby greats Lote Tuqiri, Drew Mitchell, Morgan Tuanui, Radike Samo, Brendan Cannon and Adam Freier making up part of the side, with more still to be announced.

Lauded as one of the true characters of the game, Finegan has played more than 50 matches for the Wallabies and is well qualified to lead the Classic Wallabies into this exciting match. With NRL and rugby union legend Lote Tuqiri on board along with former Wallaby and Waratah Drew Mitchell, this is a clash not to be missed.

The twilight fixture on Tuesday, 24 October at Crozier Field will see some of rugby's biggest stars on display in one of only two matches in the Barbarians tour of Australia. Radio personality Alan Jones will be at the helm of the Barbarians squad, making his rugby union coaching comeback in Lismore after a 30-year hiatus.

“We are so tremendously excited to have a rugby fixture of international quality taking place in Lismore and to have Owen Finegan as Classic Wallabies coach along with a line-up of Australian rugby icons – this is a significant coup for the fixture,” Lismore City Council Tourism and Events Manager Mitch Lowe said.

“Grandstand tickets are almost sold out, so anyone who’s keen to see this match had better hurry.”

Rugby fans will also have the opportunity to hear from Alan Jones and Classic Wallabies stars at ‘An Afternoon with Alan Jones’, a luncheon at the Lismore Turf Club on the Sunday before the match (22 October). The luncheon is a great opportunity to hear from Alan before his long-awaited return to rugby coaching.

The Classic Wallabies versus International Barbarians match will kick off at 5.30pm at Crozier Field on Tuesday, 24 October. For ticket purchases go to
