Last chance to register for Second Hand Saturday

Friday, 08 September 2017

People keen to make some bucks and help save waste from landfill have until 13 September to sign up for Second Hand Saturday.

Second Hand Saturday is the biggest coordinated garage sale day of the year, and more than 1000 garage sales expected to be held across the North Coast on Saturday, 23 September.

An optional ‘leftovers’ day will also be held on Saturday, 30 September so you have double the chance to sell your stuff.

According to Second Hand Saturday organisers North East Waste, the latest Second Hand Economy report commissioned by Gumtree states that Australian households could be hoarding an estimated $40 billion worth of unwanted items.

“And if that’s not enough to make you start eyeing off those bits and pieces around the house, it’s likely that each individual household is holding onto about 25 items and an estimated $5203 worth of ‘stuff’ that they no longer need,” Linda Tohver from North East Waste said.

“If these figures raise an eyebrow, then be sure to join us for Second Hand Saturday.”

Megan Spyker from Lennox Head was the 100th person to register for this year’s event and is a Second Hand Saturday first-timer.

“We have been accumulating a collection of pre-loved baby and kids gear for a future garage sale. However, we never seem to find the right time to host a garage sale. So when I saw Second Hand Saturday advertised it was a no brainer,” she said.

“Now that we have a date set, the kids are getting involved and have started going through all of their belongings and clothing. It’s been a good process for the kids to let go of items they no longer use or need and understand the reuse process and value of items we are selling.

“We are looking forward to being part of a wider united message for the community to recognise that it’s a great idea to buy second hand to reduce waste to landfill. I look forward to seeing someone else’s excitement over something we have. There is such a joy people receive from finding treasures at second-hand sales; it's priceless. You never know what you might find.”

Both individuals and organisations are welcome to register for Second Hand Saturday, and it is a great opportunity for local clubs to hold a giant fundraising garage sale or for neighbours to get together for a street sale.

Registration is free and your garage sale will be promoted in local newspapers, online and in the popular Second Hand Saturday app. You will also be able to pick up a free garage sale sign at Council leading up to the big day.

Sign up before 13 September at www.secondhandsaturday.com.au or phone 1300 87 83 87. To keep up to date with announcements, follow Second Hand Saturday on Facebook.

Second Hand Saturday is coordinated by North East Waste on behalf of its member councils including Lismore City Council, and it is funded by the NSW EPA's Waste Less Recycle More initiative through the waste levy.
