Choose to reuse and have fun with community activities during Plastic Free July!

Council resolved in February to participate in Plastic Free July and involve the local community and businesses to help eliminate single-use plastic bags in the Lismore Local Government Area.

Council aims to encourage and inspire the community to choose to reuse and say no to plastic bags by providing free bag making workshops, supporting Lismore Boomerang Baggers and a running a reusable bag design competition. The winning design will be printed on reusable shopping bags and will be distributed free to the community via participating local businesses.

Increasingly people are becoming concerned about the production and disposal of plastic bags due to their significant environmental impacts such as ingestion and entanglement of marine wildlife, street and stormwater litter, and health and environmental impacts from micro plastics.

Plastic is designed to last forever, yet every day we use it for disposable items which last a few minutes and are thrown away. Most goes to landfill, some is recycled and much ends up in the environment. Every bit of plastic ever made still exists somewhere and it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans!

Help us to make Lismore a plastic-free zone as part of Plastic Free July and get involved.

Business survey
We are asking retailers to complete a survey to better understand how our businesses use or don't use single-use plastic bags (e.g. customer preference, barriers and challenges to reduction or elimination). Your input would be greatly appreciated and it only takes a few minutes.

Fabric donations greatly appreciated too!

The Lismore Boomerang Bags provide a free, fun, sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Lismore Boomerang Baggers meet regularly to cut, sew and create new reusable shopping bags made from fabric offcuts. They aim to produce a supply of bags to have available at local shops for customers to use and bring back (i.e. a boomerang). People can donate fabric or join their sewing Saturdays at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre from 11.30am to 3.30pm. More information at www.facebook.com/boomerangbags
