Preparing for an emergency
To prepare for floods, it is recommended to create an emergency plan and gather important documents and phone numbers.
The NSW SES offer templates for home emergency plans, and the Australian Red Cross has a ‘Get Prepared’ app that allows you to create an emergency plan on a mobile device.
It is also recommended to have a checklist of important family records, including wills, birth and marriage certificates, and financial documents, stored in a secure location and ready to be packed in a waterproof bag in case of evacuation.
What to have in your emergency kit
It’s a good idea to have a basic kit ready at all times.
At least, the kit should comprise:
- First-aid supplies
- Battery operated portable radio
- Spare batteries for radio and torch
