COUNCIL IS 'MAKING THE SWITCH' FOR EARTH HOUR

Wednesday, March 23 2011

Lismore City Council is "Switching off" this week in preparation for Earth Hour on Saturday 26 March between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and we are inviting everyone in the region, businesses and individuals, to join us.

Earth Hour, a partnership between World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Australia, Leo Burnett, and Fairfax Media, has grown into the world's largest community-driven campaign for the planet. At the centre of the campaign is the symbolic action of switching lights off at 8:30pm Saturday 26 March. Individuals, businesses and communities join a visible statement of commitment to a sustainable future for us all.

Sharyn Hunnisett, Council's Environmental Strategies Officer, said Earth Hour is an excellent way for the Northern Rivers to show our support in reducing the effects of climate change. "Taking the first step is as easy as turning off your lights for one hour. It's a great example of how the small actions that we all take can create a large impact when we work together."

However, Earth Hour is about more than just switching off the lights, so Lismore City Council is going 'beyond the Hour' and it is running an internal 'Make the Switch' campaign over the next three weeks to encourage permanent behavioural change.

"We would like to encourage individuals and businesses to go that extra step beyond Earth Hour to continually practice switching off of non-essential lights and appliances. Not only will this save greenhouse gas emissions, but you will save money too."

On Saturday night you could get together with family, friends and neighbours for a BBQ or head out to your local park for the hour. Take some binoculars and look at the stars. Or just go for a stroll. Talk with your family and friends about the state of our planet and the need to make a change to keep the place we live the way we need it to be.

Get off STANDBY, unplug any appliances like mobile phone chargers, TV, microwave, MP3 players that are not being used and are on standby. Appliances left on standby account for up to 10% of the average household's electricity use.

Do something non-electric as a family - have a picnic or a have a candlelit dinner - but most importantly spread the word about Earth Hour and enjoy!

*All essential services including water supply, sewerage systems and street lighting will be unaffected by Earth Hour.
