A happier, safer Goonellabah all part of the plan

Thursday, May 16 2013

Police, youth workers, retailers, sporting representatives, health and education workers, employment providers and Lismore City Council staff will all put pen to paper on Friday for the official signing ceremony for the Goonellabah Community Plan.

The Goonellabah Community Plan represents a unique, whole-of-community approach to create a safer, happier and more inclusive Goonellabah.

Through a series of targeted projects, the Goonellabah Community Plan aims to reduce antisocial behaviour and tackle domestic violence, increase employment opportunities, offer sporting and social events and encourage respect between all ages of people living in the community.

There are a variety of projects being rolled out as part of the plan. These include:

• A Youth and Community Space offering access to services and a gathering place.

• The Goonellabah Youth Protocol educational materials that deliver important messages about respectful behaviour.

• Sports and social inclusion events to encourage physical activity, fun, mentoring, community-building and self-confidence.

• A Goonellabah Safety Circle so the community can meet with police to share perspectives, look at crime prevention and create a more welcoming suburb.

• The Yoogumbeh Boomleh and Tackling Violence advertising campaign to raise awareness of the impacts of domestic violence.

• Signage that recognises and celebrates Aboriginal culture and boosts community pride.

• A North Coast TAFE Retail Skills Course and Employment Scoping project to provide skills training to young Aboriginal people and enhance employment opportunities.

Council’s Youth & Community Development Officer Lizette Twisleton said Friday would be a special day for her, watching as community leaders joined with each other to sign the plan and commit to working together.

“It has taken an enormous amount of work to develop these projects across so many different areas and with so many stakeholders – all credit should go to them for being enthusiastic and committed to this process. It will be very exciting to see all those people sign on the dotted line,” Lizette said.

“The Goonellabah Community Plan has the potential to have far-reaching impacts in the Goonellabah community, which has its own unique set of challenges and therefore needs targeted solutions. Looking so specifically at one suburb really gave us the chance to tailor these projects to meet on-the-ground needs and empower this community to grow and change for the better.”
