WORK BEGINS ON NEW BRIDGE ON OLIVER AVENUE
Work has begun this week to construct a new bridge across the culvert on Oliver Avenue which was washed out during the May flood event.
Lismore City Councils Executive Director for Infrastructure Services, Garry Hemsworth, said that contractors arrived on site on Monday and had already commenced piling works to prepare the foundations for a single span concrete bridge.
The decision to build a bridge comes after consideration of a number of options involving a detailed process of geotechnical investigation and design.
We investigated two separate designs for a bridge as well as an arch culvert before coming to the conclusion for the preferred option, a pre-cast concrete structure, Mr Hemsworth said.
He went on to say that the location, the stability of the ground and the ability for the structure to meet changing environmental factors such as increased water flow were important considerations when determining the best option for the site.
Once the piling has been completed, Councils bridge crews will start to build the foundation which will support the bridge deck. This will be followed by the installation of concrete girders which will form the bridge deck, Mr Hemsworth said.
The final design at this site also includes the reinstatement of the pedestrian walkway underneath the road and rehabilitation of the creekbed.
Construction is due to be completed by early February.
This new bridge, costing $1.3million, will have a life expectancy of 100 years.
Mr Hemsworth said that Council has made every effort to rebuild access for Oliver Avenue motorists in the shortest possible timeframe and we are confident of keeping to this schedule, weather permitting.
The $1.3million project to rebuild Oliver Avenue will be funded from the Natural Disaster Fund and administered by the Roads and Traffic Authority.
