OPENING OF NEW BLAKEBROOK BRIDGE
Lismore Mayor, Jenny Dowell, will officially open a new bridge on Nimbin Road on Friday, October16, 2009.
I am pleased to announce the new Blakebrook Bridge on Nimbin Road is now open to traffic, improving safety and driving conditions for local motorists," Mayor Dowell said.
Costing $2,100,000, the new Blakebrook Bridge has been 50:50 funded by Lismore City Council and the NSW State Government under the Regional Roads Timber Bridge Replacement Program administered by the Roads and Traffic Authority, NSW.
The bridge work is part of Lismore City Councils program to upgrade old failing, high-maintenance timber bridges with durable concrete structures. This will significantly reduce on-going maintenance costs.
The Council program identifies deteriorating timber bridges for replacement with low maintenance, long-life structures as part of a minimum cost for longest life strategy to ensure a more sustainable road network for the future.
The new bridge, which comprises of a two lane, 9m wide pavement and a total length of 60m, is one of the longest bridges constructed by Council staff. The bridge has four 15metre spans with a total of32 pre-cast concrete girders founded on a total of 48 concrete piles.
Mayor Dowell said, The construction of this bridge is a testament to the skill and workmanship of Councils hard-working bridge crew.
Some elements of the bridge design and construction were highly technical and advice was sought from various consultants and manufacturers to assist our bridge crew to build this vital piece of infrastructure for Councils road network, Mayor Dowell said.
The high construction standard will ensure the 100year design life of the bridge is achieved.
Constructed approximately 30m to the south of the existing bridge, the existing bridge was able to be used during construction of its replacement. Works also included the re-alignment of approximately 250metres of Nimbin Road.
The new bridge will be open to traffic following the official ceremony and subsequent line-marking works.
Lismore City Council closely monitors all bridges and roads with a commitment towards maintaining and expanding a safe, efficient road network.
Mayor Jenny Dowell will officially open the new Blakebrook Bridge on Nimbin Road, Blakebrook, at 9.30 am on Friday, October16, 2009.News
