Local Australia Day Awards 2010

Citizen of the Year
The winner of this award has combined her talents for music and the welfare of young people to facilitate vocal performances in the Lismore community and to assist the North Coast Children's Home and the Parish preschool. She established the Lismore Children Choir and the Nouveaux Singers and has recently formed the Inspired Voices Choir at Caroona Aged Care. She also volunteers teaching English to speakers of other languages.

The Winner of Lismore Citizen of the Year Award for 2010 is Deirdre Paillas

Aboriginal Citizen of the Year
The winner of the inaugural Aboriginal Citizen of the Year award is a young man committed to nurturing younger Aboriginal men and teaching cultural behaviours to them. He is a mentor at camps and other programs and leads by example in his paid work in youth programs and in his daily life. His nominees praise his maturity and commitment.

The winner of Lismore's Aboriginal Citizen of the Year for 2010 is Si Minniecon.

Young Citizen
The winner of this category is a leader, volunteer and gifted public speaker engaged in making our community a better place. She is involved in her school’s SRC, environment and community service groups and at the soup kitchen, with young children, the environment, Youth Parliament and the library while excelling in her studies and working part-time.

The winner of Lismore’s Young Citizen for 2010 is Lucy Barker.

Junior Sportsperson
The winner of this award excels in football, the world game. He has represented the region and the nation as captain of an Under 13 tour of Malaysia and as a graduate of the first Johnny Warren Football Foundation program. He is focused, humble and polite and has been recognized by coaches at local, state and national level as a future Socceroo.

The winner of the Junior Sportsperson award is Jaiden Walker.

Senior Sportsperson
The winner of this award has committed more than 50 years to table tennis on the Far North Coast. In his younger days, he was an active competitor and after selling his Clunes macadamia farm, he built the table tennis centre up the road for the sport he loves. The Centre has hosted many tournaments including the Australian Junior Championships.

The winner of the Senior Sportsperson category is Jim Armstrong

Sports Team
The winner of this award is a team and club that achieved a dream. In its first year in the regional competition, the senior team reached the grand final to lose by one point. Most of the Club's players, coaches and administrators are proudly Aboriginal. The Club is committed to healthy lifestyles, strong family relationships as well as sporting success.

The winner of the Sports Team Award is Northern United Rugby League Football Club

Community Services
The winner of this award has been a volunteer trainer with his organization for 40 years. During the past 12 months he has trained and assessed 627 students in vital first aid procedures. He is a frequently-seen trainer in work places, schools and community groups throughout our community having joined St John Ambulance in Chillingham in 1969. He is widely known as "Mr St John".

The winner of the Community Services award is Alf Smith

Community Services Group
The recipient of this award is a group that has fundraised in our community for 92 years. The 25 current members raised $50,000 last year or $500 per member. Through their twice monthly foyer stalls, sausage sizzles, raffles and stalls in local shopping centres and their work in the coffee shop, the members have provided many pieces of vital medical equipment to the Lismore Base Hospital.
